Exploring Postsecondary Pathways Through Shadow Days

Philadelphia, PA, June 22, 2026 - Liguori Academy

Philadelphia, PA — At Liguori Academy, preparing students for life after graduation means providing opportunities to experience potential careers firsthand. Through Shadow Days, 11th and 12th grade students spend time with local businesses and organizations, gaining valuable insight into professional environments while exploring postsecondary pathways that align with their interests.

For Asia, a student in the Healthcare Sciences Cohort, her shadow day provided a unique opportunity to explore the field of forensic science through the Philadelphia Police Department’s forensic unit.

During her visit, Asia learned how to take fingerprints, reviewed evidence from previous cases, and observed how evidence lockers are maintained.

“This experience taught me how important it is to follow detailed steps to make sure investigations are done correctly,” Asia shared. “My favorite part was learning about the cases because it was interesting to see how much work goes into solving them.”

The experience reinforced Asia’s interest in the field and helped prepare her for her next step: attending Chestnut Hill College to pursue a career in forensic social work.

For Marvin, a student in the Technology Cohort, his shadow day at CORA Services introduced him to opportunities within psychology, education, and youth development.

“I got to work with kids, see all the after-school and summer programs CORA offers, and meet a great group of people who were welcoming and professional,” Marvin said.

Beyond learning about the field, Marvin gained confidence in his professional skills.

“This experience made me more confident in myself. I feel like I can go somewhere and know how to act in a professional manner.”

Community partners also see the value in helping students explore future careers. Troy Emidy, President of SL Commercial, LLC, hosted students from Liguori Academy’s Construction Cohort and introduced them to a variety of construction management and skilled trades projects.

“They got to experience several different phases of construction management and the major construction trades across multiple project sites,” Emidy said. “It was an amazing day.”

As Liguori Academy continues to expand its workforce development and postsecondary programming, Shadow Days remain an important part of helping students connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. These opportunities allow students to explore career interests, build professional skills, and make informed decisions about their futures.

Liguori Academy extends its sincere gratitude to all of the organizations that hosted students this year.
