Branching Out: Liguori’s Garden Club Shines at the Philadelphia Flower Show
March 2026 - The Alphonsus Post
Liguori’s Garden Club, led by Mr. Steve and Ms. Daisy, recently attended the Philadelphia Flower Show in Center City to showcase their Ponytail Palm, the plan they had been growing this past school year.
The most important thing about Garden Club is its community involvement. Students who participate make friends, tackle challenges together, and work through issues as a team. Each year, after tending to the school’s gardens and handling the plants in front of the building, the club also grows a specific plant for submission to the Flower Show before taking a field trip with its dedicated members to see it on display. Students report greatly enjoying both the Flower Show itself and finally seeing the sum of their efforts, not to mention the community of friendship they have built within the club.
The Philadelphia Flower Show is an annual festival held since 1829, featuring many different types of plant life along with vendors and special exhibits. The Alphonsus Post interviewed multiple members of the Garden Club along with Mr. Steve and Ms. Daisy about their experiences.
Mr. Steve shared his thoughts on how the club has grown since its founding. “I think we started with the idea of having something that was lightheaded and not really rigorous, wile also letting us focus on the gardens.” He went on the joke that the club had “branched out” very well since its inception. These two teachers have taken great care of the club and fostered a lighthearted community that cares deeply about the work it does around Liguori.
Two of the members are cousins: Sophomore Armani and Sophomore Alkeimany, both dedicated members who participated in growing the plant submitted to the Flower Show. Sophomore Armani, when recounting the Flower Show, focused on her favorite exhibit. “I really liked how beautiful everything was outside, but I spent most of my time with the butterflies. I got over ten butterflies on me and had lots of fun in there and would love to go again.” She spend nearly an hour in the butterfly room with her friends from the club.
Sophomore Alkeimany was focused on the community she found, stating that the best part was the time she spent walking around with her friends and cousin, looking at the pretty flowers. Both students enthusiastically confirms they would be returning to the Garden Club the following year.
Congratulations to Liguori Academy’s Garden Club for earning an Honorable Mention at the Philadelphia Flower Show for the second year in a row!
